Salaam, friends!

I’ve always been fascinated by the spaces in between—between cultures, identities, traditions, and even time zones. In these in-between places, I’ve found my greatest joys, challenges, and discoveries. And that’s precisely why I’ve created Hilastan.

For those who don’t know me, I’m Hila—a storyteller, traveler, and proud Afghan-American. I was born and raised in Southern California, but my roots run deep in Afghanistan. Growing up between these two vastly different worlds has been a journey—one full of learning, reconciling, and ultimately, embracing both sides of who I am.

Hilastan is a space where I’ll share stories that capture this unique experience. It’s a place for anyone who has ever felt like they live in two worlds, trying to find harmony between them. Through my stories, I hope you’ll see how the East and West can coexist beautifully, even when they sometimes clash. My journey is far from perfect (is anyone’s ever?), but it’s uniquely mine—and I can’t wait to share it with you.

My Story: From California to Kabul and Back Again

The first time I truly connected with my Afghan roots was in 2005, when my family visited Afghanistan. I was 11 years old, armed with a silver Panasonic camcorder my mom had given me, ready to document our trip. Little did I know, that trip would spark my lifelong love for storytelling.

I remember feeling like an outsider even in my homeland—struggling to speak the language, navigating the chaotic streets of Kabul, and trying to make sense of the layers of history, dust, and beauty surrounding me. There were moments of humor (like squeezing into a cramped taxi with my entire family) and frustration (attempting to clean a dusty leather backpack with a disastrous result). But most importantly, there were moments of clarity, where I felt a deep connection to my culture in a way I hadn’t before.

That trip shaped how I view my identity and ignited my passion for bridging cultures. I wanted to tell stories—not just about Afghanistan, but about what it means to live between worlds, to carry the weight of two identities, and to find beauty in both.

What to Expect from Hilastan

In Hilastan, you can expect stories from my travels, insights into Afghan culture, and reflections on the hyphenated life of being Afghan-American. I’ll share personal anecdotes, from the funny to the poignant, as I navigate what it means to honor my roots while embracing the life I’ve built in the West.

We’ll dive into:

  • Travel: I’ll take you along on my adventures, whether I’m wandering the bustling streets of Kabul, enjoying the coastal beauty of Southern California, or discovering new places around the world.
  • Culture: From the importance of Afghan food and traditions to the blending of East and West in fashion, music, and more, I’ll explore the ways in which my heritage informs my daily life.
  • Identity: The constant balancing act of living between two cultures can be both beautiful and challenging. I’ll share the lessons I’ve learned and the ongoing journey of self-discovery.

But Hilastan isn’t just about me. It’s about you, too. Whether you’re part of the Afghan diaspora or navigating your own hyphenated identity, I hope this blog serves as a reminder that we’re all in this together—finding our way, bridging gaps, and creating new narratives for ourselves.

Join the Journey

So, whether you’re here for the stories, the culture, or just a place to feel a little more connected, welcome! I’m excited to share Hilastan with you and hope you’ll find something here that resonates with your own story.

Let’s build this community together—one story, experience, and bridge at a time.

Until next time, khushala wosey (stay happy).

With love,
Hila

Born and raised in Southern California, Hila Hamidi is a writer/producer and runs a digital marketing agency based out of Orange County. Her passion for storytelling flourished at eleven when she visited Afghanistan for the first time. Dropping out of high school at sixteen to pursue a career in architecture, Hila quickly became her family’s disappointment by graduating from the University of Southern California with a degree in business and screenwriting. Shortly after, she redeemed herself by working with National Geographic, Warner Bros. Stage 13, Break the Room, and a Chuck Lorre sitcom with Warner Bros. over at CBS and now FOX. She also runs this blog, Hilastan, where she shares her travels and explores her hyphenated identity, working on bridging the gap between the east and west.
